Kindle cover

My daughter has given me a kindle. It's beautiful and I love it! So today I made a cover for it. The fabric design I chose is one called cats by Laurel Birch who does the most amazing art work. I padded it with wadding to protect the kindle and added a pocket for my train tickets. The pattern is here if you want to make one.

Kindle Cover 5 1/2x 8 3/4 inches (14cm x 22cm) approx(Please measure your Kindle)
There is now a new kindle without a keyboard which needs a smaller cover
Requirements Kindle with keyboard
  • Three pieces of main fabric 6 1/4 x 9 1/2inches (16cm x 24cm) If you want the pattern to continue over the pocket two of these must be identical
  • Two pieces of lining fabric 6 1/4  x 8 3/4 inches( 16cm X 22cm)
  • Two pieces of wadding as big or slightly larger than the lining pieces
  • One piece of 1/4inch(0.5cm) wide elastic just long enough to go round your kindle without stretching

Requirements Kindle without keyboard
  • Three pieces of main fabric 6  x 8 1/2inches (15cm x 21.5cm) If you want the pattern to continue over the pocket two of these must be identical
  • Two pieces of lining fabric 6    x 7 3/4 inches( 15cm X 19.5cm)
  • Two pieces of wadding as big or slightly larger than the lining pieces
  • One piece of 1/4inch(0.5cm) wide elastic just long enough to go round your kindle without stretching

Method
            I used a 3/8 inch (1cm) seam allowance throughout
  • Place a piece of lining right side up onto a piece of wadding
  • Sew round the lining staying inside the seam line
  • Do the same with the other pieces of lining and wadding
  • Trim the wadding to the same size as the lining

  • Fold the pocket piece in half and sew along the fold 3/8 inch (1cm) from the edge

  • Place the pocket piece on top of the front piece and sew together down the sides and across the bottom staying within the seam allowance

  • Take one piece of main fabric and one of lining
  • Keeping the right sides of the fabric together join the top of the main fabric to the top of the lining piece(1cm seam allowance)
  • Repeat with the other piece of main fabric and lining

  • Matching main to main and lining to lining, right sides together sew down one long edge
  • Open up fabric and fold in the other direction
  • Press fold. This will form casing for elastic

  • Sew ends of elastic to seam allowance just under the seam ( the elastic is shorter than the width of the material)

  • Fold the fabrics in half right sides together
  • Sew along the seam allowance to join the sides and the bottom of the main fabric (do not join the lining end)

  • Sew centre of elastic to the seam positioning it to match other edge
  • Turn right side out
  • Turn in edges of lining and join (either slip stitch them together or run a line of machine sewing close to edge
  • Push lining to inside

  • Keeping elastic pushed up against fold sew round the top edge of the case 3/8 inch (1cm) from edge to form casing for elastic
  • Your cover should look like this. If the pocket is upside down like mine was do not panic (like I did) just turn the pocket inside out and it will be on the other side and the right way up

  1. Thanks Ann. I'm buying my crafty girlfriend (crafty creative, not crafty sneaky!) a kindle for her birthday and she is going to love making this for it!

    Thanks once again.
